Wine Crates and Suitcases and Trunks, Oh My!

Coming from a family of wine lovers, I have been intrigued for some time by the simple beauty of a wine crate. Of course it has to be sturdy enough to hold 12 bottles of wine, but what I love are the designs burned or printed on the outsides of the crates, proclaiming the house, vintage and type of grape.
Starting with that, there are all kinds of uses for these sturdy little conveyors of wine. And that's where I come in. I have my products throughout my own home, and I use the converted crates as an attractive newspaper holder, a nice magazine/book catch-all, and even a dog bed for my 6-lb. MaltiPoo, Lily.
I also like the look of old trunks and suitcases - think of the kind of thing you might see in a Ralph Lauren ad . . . They make a great base for creating an ottoman, or footstool, with the interior being quite useful for all manner of storage - books, blankets and boardgames. Each one is unique, and brings with it its own character and flavor. The larger trunks are harder to come by (I mostly troll the antique shops in my area for my raw material), but they make a more substantial piece of furniture. I use ours in front of our sofa for a comfortable place to put up my feet in front of a roaring fire. Lovely!
